Costumer Reviews
I've owned this hot plate for a little over two months now and have pretty much used it daily to make a single serving of black refried beans. It boils the little-over half-a-cup of water in a little under seven minutes and the beans turn out great. One caution is that, except for the legs, the whole device tends to get hot when using it - not just the burner. Overall I consider this a good hot plate and highly recommend it.
I'm not sure how the other two reviewers gave this 5-stars - maybe I got a bad one. Out of the box it takes forever to boil water, if it can even get to that point. I live in a place with only a kitchenette, no oven or stove, so I bought this for $20, a Chefmate electric skillet for $20, and an Oster toaster oven for $50 in order to cook food at home. Yes, I went cheap, but I needed to figure out what worked best before dropping much $$.
The skillet and toaster oven are amazing. I can cook up onions, tomatoes, meat, etc. in the electric skillet in a flash - way before the water even starts to boil on this hot plate. I've tried giving it a head start by bringing the water to a boil in an electric kettle, but as soon as I transfer the water to a pot on the hot plate and add the pasta, it can't even reach a simmer, so I end up with soggy pasta that's been sitting in warm water. I'm beyond the 30-day return period, so I'm stuck with it but hoping I can find a better option with either a commercial-grade hot plate or an induction burner.
