I bought this unit to sit in front of a non-working fireplace. The "embers" and "flames" are fairly realistic, especially at the dimmer settings (they DID fool the dog). It doesn't seem to put out a lot of heat, but that is not the primary reason I bought it. The cabinet is shiny metal. I think it would look better with more of a matte finish on it, but it does seem to be sturdy. All-in-all, I think this unit was a very good deal for the price. Delivery was unbelievably fast. I ordered this on a Friday night, nine days before Christmas, and received it on the following Tuesday AM. It was well packed and all the necessary hardware (except a screwdriver) were enclosed.
